Mr. Khalil ur Rehman Ramday

While serving as the Advocate General for Punjab, Justice Ramday was elevated as a Judge of the Lahore High Court in October, 1988. In January, 2002, he was elevated again as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, and then laid down his robes on reaching the age of superannuation in January, 2010.

During his long tenure as a member of the Supreme Court, Justice Ramday decided important cases in the constitutional, criminal and civil branches of law. In 2007, he came to lead the 13-member Bench of the Supreme Court, which heard a petition filed by the then Chief Justice of Pakistan challenging his removal from office by General Pervez Musharraf, the then President of Pakistan. The President’s action was declared a nullity and the deposed Chief Justice was restored to office through a judgement authored by Justice Ramday.

In 1973, Justice Ramday started teaching at the Punjab University Law College, Lahore, as a visiting Assistant Professor. In 1982, he started teaching law at the Civil Services Academy in Lahore and continues to do so till date. He also lectures at the National Defence University, Islamabad; at the National School of Public Policy, Lahore; and at the National Institute of Management Sciences, Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar. Justice Ramday has also had the privilege of delivering lectures at Air War College, Karachi; the Naval War College, Lahore; Harvard Law School; and Georgetown University, U.S.A.

Justice Ramday has been associated with various universities as a Member of their Board of Governors and the Senate, including the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS); the Lahore School of Economics (LSE); the Air University, Islamabad and the National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad.

Recognising his services in the field of education, law and dispensation of justice, Guru Nanak Dev University of India conferred upon Justice Ramday the degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) in 2005.

Justice Ramday is teaching Criminal Law to first year LL.B students this semester.
