Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law
The Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) at LUMS pioneered the five-year BA.LLB degree, combining the richness of a liberal arts and interdisciplinary education with a solid professional training in law. The five-year BA.LLB programme was first offered in 2003.The structure of this programme was adopted as the template for legal education to be followed across the country in 2015 by the Pakistan Bar Council. SAHSOL periodically reviews its core programme in light of feedback from students, faculty, and stakeholders, and best practices at leading law schools around the world.
It combines the richness of a liberal arts and interdisciplinary education with a solid professional training in law. Since 2003, we have been offering the BA.LLB programme; first under the Department of Law and Policy of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; and since 2012, as one of LUMS’ five Schools, housed in its own law school building, benefitting from state-of-the-art facilities and student services. Infact, through the pioneering efforts of our university, it has become the model for legal education across the country. SAHSOL is constantly innovating and refining its pedagogy and curriculum to ensure that student learning happens in a stimulating and interactive fashion. Learning inside the classroom is supplemented by opportunities to undertake legal internships, contribute to the LUMS Law Journal, participate in national and international moot court competitions, assist with faculty research and engage in other opportunities for learning outside the classroom.
The distinct advantages of a legal education in which students are encouraged to develop their critical faculties and to approach problem-solving from various disciplinary angles are realized thereby in formal and informal settings. A wide array of student societies including the Law & Politics Society and an active intellectual environment of workshops, seminars and conferences at the law school and across the University enable students to broaden their skills and capacities beyond the classroom.
What we see as further advancement in the training and education provided to date is clinical legal education. Clinical legal education will enable the students to apply knowledge and skills learnt from curricular and extracurricular activities at SAHSOL on real cases thereby combining theory and practice and increasing their professional capacities as future lawyers. In parallel, in providing legal services to underserved communities, students will inculcate a culture of service that is a fundamental part of the legal profession. In putting their learning to practice, students will get a chance to consider the role of legal ethics, and the challenging situations that a lawyer finds oneself in during the course of their work.
SAHSOL aims to foster excellence in legal education and research and promote social justice, rule of law and human rights in our many communities.
To continually innovate our curricular offerings and pedagogies to incorporate diverse and interdisciplinary perspectives in the study of law
To enable students to cultivate communities of learning, action and mutual support while retaining a commitment to academic freedom and integrity.
To advance humanistic and equitable goals through our engagements with diverse fields of legal practice and political and social spheres
