Book Launch of Progressive Laws in Patriarchal Societies by Sara Malkani

LUMS

The Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) was honoured to host the launch of Progressive Laws in Patriarchal Societies by distinguished advocate and human rights lawyer, Sara Malkani, on 10th October 2025. The event brought together students, faculty, and legal practitioners for an engaging conversation on the evolution of gender justice in Pakistan.

Drawing on two decades of legislative reform around gender-based violence, Sara’s book examines a critical question: Why do progressive laws often fail to translate into meaningful change for women and girls? Through a rigorous blend of court case analysis, data from criminal proceedings, and interviews with survivors and activists, she illustrates how structural gaps in state institutions, particularly the criminal justice system, and entrenched social norms limit legal reform. Yet, as she compellingly argues, the law still holds power: it opens avenues for activism, advocacy, and resistance.

During the discussion, Sara reflected on her extensive legal career spanning constitutional litigation, family and criminal law, and international human rights. With nearly 15 years of practice in Pakistan and earlier experience in Los Angeles, she has served as legal adviser to the Center for Reproductive Rights and has frequently assisted the Sindh High Court as amicus curiae in matters concerning women's and children’s rights.

The launch concluded with a thoughtful Q&A highlighting the urgency of strengthening both policy and practice to ensure justice beyond the statute book.
