About the Conference

Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) at LUMS is delighted to announce its Annual Conference 2025, a premier gathering of scholars, practitioners, and activists engaging with some of the most pressing legal and political issues of our time.

The theme of this year’s conference, “Futures of International Law,” invites critical reflections on the contemporary international legal order, its legitimacy, and its responsiveness to ongoing and emerging global challenges.

Recent events, including Israel’s wars against the people of Palestine, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, forced migration due to climate change, and the role of international economic institutions in perpetuating inequality, have raised urgent questions about the effectiveness, equity, and resilience of international law. Is international law still a tool for justice, or has it become a mechanism for maintaining global inequalities? Can it be reclaimed by those it has historically failed?

Through a diverse set of panels and keynote addresses, this conference aims to reimagine the structures and principles that should guide international law in the 21st century.

Conference Themes and Panels

  • The Legitimacy of International Law: Historical challenges and contemporary issues
  • Structures and Practices of International Adjudication
  • The Myth and Reality of International Humanitarian Law
  • International economic, climate and investment law: Imperialism, colonialism, and global inequalities
  • Human Rights and Inhuman Wrongs
  • Displacement, Migration, and Refugees in the Anthropocene
