A Century of Making and Breaking the Indus
On Friday, 9th September Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) and LUMS Law and Politics Society (LPS) collaborated to organize first in a series of talks to understand the structural causes of flooding in Pakistan. The speaker Dr Majed Akhtar is a Senior Lecturer, Department of Geography, King’s College London, UK. It was moderated by Dr Hasan H. Karrar, Associate Professor, Department of Humanities, MGSHSS.
The talk explored Dr Akhter's research on the historical and political geography of the Indus Waters Treaty and the Indus Basin Plan. Against an insightful exploration of the ecological impact of large dam construction and operations in Pakistan, Dr. Akhter also directed the audience to possible interventions to manage flood plains and the lives and livelihoods of those most vulnerable to flooding risks and disasters.
